(Bangkok).- Newly appointed Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul opposes casino resort development in Thailand, warning it could worsen inequality and harm the nation’s economy, signaling a shift from the previous government’s approach.

Thailand’s new Prime Minister, Anutin Charnvirakul, has taken a firm stance against the expansion of gambling through casino resorts. He made it clear that lawmakers pushing for such initiatives may have to wait for a future administration willing to reconsider the issue. This decision has disappointed stakeholders who had hoped Thailand would follow the example of neighboring countries that have embraced casino resorts as a driver for tourism and economic growth.
Anutin echoed concerns from economists and scholars who warn that casino development could deepen economic inequality and divert resources from more productive sectors. He believes that relying on gambling as a growth strategy is misguided and could ultimately damage Thailand’s financial stability.
This position marks a policy shift from the previous administration under Paetongtarn Shinawatra, which unsuccessfully attempted to pass casino gambling legislation and repeal the Entertainment Complex Bill.
Another hot topic in the debate is the potential legalization of poker tournaments, promoted as a way to boost tourism. However, Anutin dismissed the idea, stating that poker would not significantly impact tourism growth and emphasizing alternative strategies to strengthen the economy.
